The 2022 Infosys Hall of Fame Open culminated on Sunday in beautiful weather, with a pair of excellent singles and doubles finals on Center Court at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. In singles, Maxime Cressy captured his first ATP Tour title, with Will Blumberg and Steve Johnson winning the doubles title.

After dropping the first set and going down 0-3 in the second, Cressy rattled off six straight games to even the match at a set apiece, and went on to complete the comeback, capturing the 2022 Infosys Hall of Fame Open singles title. Cressy, the No. 4 seed, defeated Alexander Bublik 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) to win his first career ATP Tour title in his third career final, all of which have come during a breakout season in 2022. With today’s win, Cressy becomes the 13th active American with a title on tour.

“I never thought I would win my first ATP Tour title in a comeback like that. It was really the power of the mind, sticking to it, and never giving up,” said Cressy. “I was completely out of the game at the beginning. But I have routines and notes to stay present, and I’m able to cope with those situations. I had a lot of nerves, a lot of rollercoaster feelings, so it was incredible to win that title today because it was one of the hardest matches of my career.”

In the second set, Cressy’s serve-and-volley style began to click, as he fired four aces and converted all three of his break point opportunities. Both players held serve in the third through to a tiebreaker. Cressy survived a scary slip and fall with Bublik serving 5-6, 40-30, but came back to win the tiebreak and completing a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) comeback and clinching the title on a Bublik double fault.
Cressy entered Newport ranked at a career-high No. 41 in the world and will rise to just outside the top 30 following his title. He led all players in the Infosys Hall of Fame Open with 78 aces on the week, upping his total to 516 on the season to rank third on tour.

“As soon as I step into Newport, I have a renewed sense of joy,” commented Cressy. “I played my first ATP Tour tournament here, and it’s incredibly special to be part of such a historical tournament and incredible to win my first title here.”

In the 46-year history of the Infosys Hall of Fame Open, 15 players have won their first ATP Tour title in Newport. Cressy becomes the first to achieve the accomplishment since Rajeev Ram in 2009 and rises to 6-1 overall in his two appearances in Newport’s main draw.

In their first tournament as a team, Blumberg and Johnson captured the doubles title, defeating top seeds Raven Klaasen and Marcelo Melo 6-4, 7-5. Blumberg and Johnson won 75 percent of their service points and saved 4-of-4 break points en route to the trophy.

“Thanks to Will for giving me a last-minute call to play doubles here. We got it rolling on the windy day on Tuesday and kept it going,” said Johnson. “Thanks to Newport! I can’t wait to be back.”

The American pair are now two-time Infosys Hall of Fame Open champions, as Blumberg repeats as the doubles champion in after winning in 2021 with Jack Sock. Johnson captures his second title at the Infosys Hall of Fame Open, last lifting a trophy here in 2018 as singles champion.
